statutory authority for Department of Defense Civilian Law Enforcement and Police Officers

United States Department of Defense Civilian Law Enforcement and Police

“Protecting those who Defend our Nation”

Please actively support legislation for express statutory authority for Department of Defense Civilian Law Enforcement and Police Officers.

Recently the Chairman of the Federal Officers Committee and the Chairman of the Federal Officers Coalition jointly submitted a proposal for legislation for express Statutory Authority for civilian Police Officers/Detectives (OPM Occupational series 0083); Criminal Investigators (OPM Occupational series 1811) not employed as a Special Agent in the Defense Criminal Investigation Organizations; and Game/Conservation Law Enforcement Officers/Special Agents (OPM Occupational series 1812) employed by the US Department of Defense.

All of the above are civilian Federal Police Officers who, day-in and day-out, provide critical law enforcement and police services and protection to the US Military and their families and Department of Defense civilian employees and contractors on military installations in the United States. While military law enforcement have express statutory authority (10 USC 807; Article 7 Uniform Code of Military Justice) over military service members, civilian Law Enforcement and Police Officers cited above do not, nor do they have express statutory authority to arrest civilian violators of the law. While these civilian Federal Police Officers are fully qualified and expected to perform customary law enforcement and police duties, they are not expressly statutorily empowered.

The 14,000+ civilian Federal Police officers employed by the Department of Defense protect our military service members who are defending our Nation, their families, and Defense Department employees; they are our constituents and they deserve the same quality of law enforcement that members of Congress and foreign diplomats receive from the United States Capitol Police and the Uniform Division of the United States Secret Service, respectively.
